Cross-Related Campaign: Ethics Legislation Affecting Citizen Volunteers Serving on Boards and Commissions

Status: Active

Progress: 97%
Progress: 97%
Alerts Taken: 967     Goal: 1000

Issue:
In the push for ethics reform for the state of Louisiana, financial disclosure requirements intended for elected officials were extended to citizen volunteers serving on boards and commissions. Asking citizens with no political aspirations to disclose financial information that is unrelated to any potential conflicts of interest will dissuade many highly qualified and capable citizens from serving on these organizations.

Action Needed:
Help us prevent this from happening by sending a pre-formated email to members of the House stating:

  • Remove all the language added to SB 718 by the Senate Floor Amendment of Senator Joe McPherson adopted on May 28, 2008.  This will allow citizen volunteers serving on Boards and Commissions to be classified in Tier-4 disclosure requirements, which was the original intent of SB 718 by Sen. Danny Martiny;
  • Pass SB 499, which will return the definition of “lobbyist” to the original intent of those whose primary paid job or avocation is influencing government.

Legislation is expected to reach the House this week: SB 718 Tuesday, June 10th @ 9 a.m.; SB 499 Wednesday, June 11th @ 9.am. , so we urge you to send your e-mail to the members of the House today.

We need your support by contacting the Senators and asking them to vote against a Level 2 Financial Disclosure for the Southeast Louisiana Levee Boards. The New Orleans Business Council and Citizens for 1 strongly endorse moving the Levee Boards, both East and West Bank, to Tier 4.
